Everything you need to know about Tesla Powerwall

Everyone talks about Tesla Powerwall, but what is it really? In short, the Tesla Powerwall is a battery to run everything in your home when the sun is not directly generating energy through solar panels. That is, the Tesla Powerwall is a battery to store solar energy and be able to use it at the time you need it.

How functional is the Tesla Powerwall?

The sun rises every day or on most days in Puerto Rico, despite cloudy days. This means that solar panels can generate energy virtually every day of the year. Still it is necessary to be able to store all the solar energy that is generated and not used at that time to use it at night or on rainy days. It is precisely for this that solar batteries are used since they are recharged with solar energy just like the panels and allow 100% clean and renewable energy, even at night.

Energy available even in power outages

The technology of the Tesla Powerwall allows that, in case of blackouts, whether due to a natural disaster such as a hurricane or earthquake or any other situation, your property can continue to enjoy solar energy continually for seven days or more. This is possible because your Tesla Powerwall recharges automatically every day when the sun rises in the morning to always have solar energy available to run your home or business continuously. In the event that your property does not have a solar panel system, you can also enjoy solar energy during AEE blackouts when installing a Tesla battery. The Tesla Powerwall detects the blackout and immediately puts the stored energy at your fingertips to be able to turn on lights, the fridge and recharge your mobile phones and electronic devices, among other options.

A Tesla battery for every need

Not all homes, nor consumption, are the same, so Tesla Powerwall is designed to work according to the needs of each family. In addition, Tesla batteries can be self-programmed to use stored energy in accordance with electrical appliances and property usage schedules to conserve stored energy. As an additional detail, it should be noted that these batteries are very simple to install both outside and inside the properties, have a 10-year warranty, do not require maintenance and can be monitored from your cell phone 24/7. Ask our experts about your consumption needs and they will guide you on the advantages of equipping your property with one or more Tesla batteries, available in Puerto Rico through WindMar Home.

Don’t run out of electricity in an emergency or natural disaster

There is no reason to run out of energy

All of us in Puerto Rico, in one way or another, have experienced a lack of electricity in our homes and offices after the passage of hurricanes Irma and María or after the recent earthquakes. We all suffer the disruption of our daily lives and our jobs due to lack of electricity, but these situations do not have to be repeated. There is a real, effective, and accessible alternative so that you do not run out of electricity in an emergency and can continue your normal routine every day of the year, even during natural disasters and blackouts. It involves installing a solar system that includes solar panels and batteries to ensure the conversion and storage of energy 24/7.

What is a complete and autonomous solar system?

An autonomous photovoltaic system is a system of solar panels, panels, and batteries that operates completely independent of the AEE network. This type of system is recharged daily with the energy of the sun and helps you not run out of electricity in an emergency or blackout at any time of the year. The installation of an autonomous solar system is done taking into account all the needs of your family, home or business and then the system is calculated with the number of panels and batteries necessary for your lifestyle and budget.

Save on your bill and produce your own energy

The experiences of atmospheric phenomena such as the passing of storms or hurricanes annually in Puerto Rico or constant tectonic movements have made us reconsider in terms of the reliability of the electrical system provided by PREPA in our island. Even in situations of heavy rains or light winds, the system is very fragile and vulnerable, so blackouts are an increasingly common reality. By installing a solar system independent of the PREPA network, you and your family will enjoy clean and available energy all the time, while saving money by not having to make monthly payments to PREPA. In addition, a solar system will increase the value of your property in case you want to sell it in the future because it is a house prepared so that you do not run out of electricity in an emergency.

Prevention is key

Do not wait for the next blackout or natural disaster to run out of electricity. Today is the time to install an autonomous solar system and enjoy solar energy every day of the year, no matter what happens. There is also the possibility of installing a Tesla Powerwall battery system so that you can at least have electricity to charge your cell phones and turn on some appliances and light bulbs in case of power failure or disaster. Do not run out of electricity during an emergency and consult our experts on how to install a solar system on your property now.

Puerto Rico and Costa Rica: countries with 100% renewable energy

Can Puerto Rico run 100% with renewable energy?

Since 2014, Costa Rica became one of the first countries in the world to run with 100% renewable energy. Can Puerto Rico follow in the footsteps of Costa Rica? It is a fact that both countries share many similarities, including the tropical climate with most of the sunny days of the year. That in itself is already a great triumph. Costa Rica decided to make maximum use of its natural resources to eliminate the use of fossil fuels and replace them with combined renewable energy alternatives to become an example of a country running with 100% renewable energy. Among them, Costa Rica uses hydroelectric, wind and geothermal energy or from its volcanoes and solar energy. Puerto Rico does not have volcanoes to use geothermal energy but we can evolve to make the most of our natural resources like water, wind, and sun.

The new energetic policy of Puerto Rico

In fact, the new public energy policy of Puerto Rico, which entered into effect in 2019, requires the progressive elimination of the use of fossil fuels in favor of renewables as sources of energy generation from now until we are capable of running with 100% renewable energy by 2050. That said, it is up to the Government to make the necessary changes to effect the transition and eliminate the use of fossil fuels at the administration level, but citizens must also do their part.

We can all do our part

By installing a solar system on your property, you and your family will not only enjoy electric power at all times, even during blackouts or natural disasters but will save on electricity by not having to pay PREPA monthly and will be already ready to comply with the guideline of being completely disconnected from fossil fuels by 2050. As in Costa Rica, we help Puerto Rico to become one of the countries running with 100% renewable energy, doing our part to make our homes and businesses use solar energy daily. After all, the new energy policy states that the transition of Puerto Rico has already begun. By 2022 the island must have eliminated 20 percent of the use of fossil fuels, 40 percent by 2025 and 60 percent by 2040 until it runs 100% renewable energy by 2050. Allow one of our consultants to guide you on how you can benefit from installing a solar energy system on your property and be part of the shift to a Puerto Rico energized with 100% renewable energy.

What is the future of solar energy?

The new energy policy

Following the natural disasters that Puerto Rico has experienced in recent years, the future of solar energy has become a topic of great relevance. In addition to this being an important issue worldwide, a law was passed on the island in April 2019 to establish the new energy public policy of Puerto Rico. This law requires the progressive elimination of the use of fossil fuels in favor of renewable sources of energy from now until achieving 100% renewable energy by 2050. As part of this new measure, which has entered into effect since last year and that promotes the future of solar energy in Puerto Rico to be accesible to the vast majority of residences and businesses, it establishes that for the year 2022 the island must have eliminated 20 percent of the use of fossil fuels, 40 percent by 2025 and 60 percent by 2040 until it was completely disconnected by 2050.

The future of solar energy is now

But what will the future of solar energy be in order to meet this goal over the next 30 years? In short, it is not necessary to expect major changes to meet this goal since in Puerto Rico we have excellent options and government incentives to disconnect from the use of fossil fuels. With the use of increasingly modern technology, very affordable prices, safe and effective facilities and the necessary financing to be able to include it within every family budget, the excuses for not making the change to solar energy should not exist. The future of solar energy is available today, at your fingertips, thanks to financing that adapts to every budget, to an increasingly efficient technology – which includes resilient batteries and increasingly functional equipment – and about government incentives that may later become unavailable.

New options for the future

Although solar energy is very accessible and efficient today, research and development of new technologies continue at full steam. Among the new developments related to the future of solar energy and that are in development are solar panels and panels that can be more effective in transforming solar energy into electrical energy, construction of cheaper materials to continue lowering costs and batteries with greater capacity to meet the demands of energy storage, among many others.

Benefits of living 100% disconnected from the power grid

The time to live disconnected from the power grid is now

If you are one of those who think that living completely independent from the AEE is a distant dream, we invite you to be part of the new reality. It is a movement known around the world as the off-grid movement (outside the power grid) and in Puerto Rico, you can already be part of it. There are many benefits of living 100% disconnected from the electrical network of PREPA, starting with the economy in your electricity bill, the security of always having available energy even during emergencies and the awareness that you are using Green energy in your home.

Energy always available, even in natural disasters

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of living 100% disconnected from the power grid, both for residential and commercial customers, is the knowledge that despite natural disasters such as storms, hurricanes, and earthquakes or even during blackouts, your property will never lack energy if you have a solar energy system. Having what is known as an autonomous or remote solar system, it includes solar panels along with some form of energy storage such as batteries. They supply the energy that your home or business needs to be completely disconnected from the power grid (AEE) at all times. With this autonomous system, you have energy independently from the power grid while enjoying the energy produced by solar panels during the day and stored in batteries at night, even in emergencies.

Do not pay more for your electricity

Another of the great benefits of living 100% disconnected from the power grid is the decrease in the monthly payment for electricity. This means that, in optimal conditions, if you have the resources to pay in one go for the installation of the solar system and the necessary batteries at the time of installation, it would become the only big expense and you will not have to pay more for electricity consumption. This initial expense, which for some and depending on the size of your property and the energy needs you have, may be large, will be “paid” after a few years of not having to pay PREPA and you will recover the full investment. But if, on the contrary, you do not have the money to able to pay the initial investment in advance, you will still save on your monthly payment since we have financing options that will allow you to pay for the solar system little by little, until finally you don’t have to pay anything for consumption.

Join the renewable energy movement

Last but not least, perhaps another of the greatest benefits of living 100% disconnected from the power grid in Puerto Rico is sleeping with the peace of mind knowing that your property uses renewable energy. By relying solely on a solar energy system with batteries, you and your family do not contribute to climate change and the environmental crisis. On the contrary, you and your family will be part of the movement towards positive change that is already proactively acting to protect the planet. Do not wait any longer and start enjoying these and many other benefits of living 100% disconnected from the power grid in Puerto Rico.

Why are there different types of solar systems?

In reality, there are mainly two types of solar systems that work by converting solar energy into electricity. This is achieved through the installation of solar panels that are formed by photovoltaic cells that collect the rays of sunlight directly and convert them into direct current or DC. Then, an inverter receives the direct current generated by the solar panels and converts it into alternating current or AC which is the most commonly used type of electricity. What can vary is if the person wants complete independence from the electric power system or if they want a system that remains connected to the power grid. Each system has its advantages and if you are interested in knowing which one suits you best and why, consult one of our experts in renewable energy in Puerto Rico.

Benefits of buying vs. Leasing your system

Types of solar systems: Which solar systems suits me?

We have all heard about solar energy and how solar systems are an economical and efficient alternative to generate electricity. Perhaps we have even considered looking for information to learn more about what the different types of solar systems are and what they offer. But how can you choose the best option?

To understand what the different types of solar systems are, you have to start by explaining what solar energy is and how it works. Solar energy is the energy that is obtained directly from the sun. It is known as renewable and clean energy since it is obtained directly from solar radiation that reaches the Earth in the form of light, heat, or ultraviolet rays. But in order to use this solar energy in our homes, it is necessary to convert it into electricity through photovoltaic systems. Photovoltaic systems convert the light we receive from the sun into electricity so that it can be used as electricity in homes or businesses.

Two types of solar systems

There are mainly two types of solar systems that work by converting solar energy into electricity. Among the solar systems available are the solar system that is connected to the grid (grid-tied) or the one that is completely isolated from the grid. A third option that currently enjoys a lot of popularity is to be connected to the power grid, but with a battery back-up system.

System connected to the mains

The grid-tied system that is connected to the power grid allows users to use all the energy they need for their home, but by being connected to the power grid (AEE) you can complement the use with that of the network and even exchanging the excess of your energy at no cost to you, in accordance with Law 114 of 2007. This system is the most economical, but it has a disadvantage that if there is no electricity from the network (AEE) it does not provide a system alternate.

Autonomous solar system

On the other hand, autonomous or remote solar systems include forms of storage, such as batteries, to supply energy in case it is needed since it is completely disconnected from the electricity grid (AEE) but is less efficient because it lacks energy conversion and more expensive since it needs a larger amount of batteries.

The alternative of the solar system tied to the grid or “grid-tied with backup” allows you to generate all the energy you need through the solar panels, store it through the connection to the network and use batteries to supply electricity in case the power grid fails. Either because you are interested in eliminating your dependence on the electricity grid, saving on your monthly energy bill, reducing environmental pollution or because you want to have electricity in your home or business 24 hours a day, there are specific types of solar systems that can be adjusted to your needs and your budget.

How does solar energy save me money?

It is an assumption that solar panel systems help save money, but despite the fame, many people question whether the initial investment in a solar system is truly a saving. The answer to that question is a clear and forceful yes. Solar energy saves you money. However, how much money you will save will depend primarily on the cost of the electricity where you live. In Puerto Rico the cost of electricity is quite high, so the savings will be high as well. Solar energy saves money in various ways. Due to the nature of the system, using solar energy to energize the home entails a large initial expense that is remedied over the years by reducing or eliminating the monthly payment of the electricity bill. And how does it reduce it? Through what is known as net metering.

Asset#5hbTdgIwprJtuQqCGm1B3P

Energy credit

The net measurement allows the excess solar energy produced by your system to be transmitted to the electricity grid in exchange for an energy credit. During the night, when your system does not produce energy, the electricity in your home is supplied by the electricity grid, thus applying the credit accumulated during the day. If you consume less than accumulated, this credit is spent the following month accumulating an indefinite credit. This model allows you to reduce the electricity bill to a considerable monthly minimum depending on your consumption levels.

Battery system

Another way in which your system reduces or eliminates the monthly bill is with the use of batteries. With a battery system, excess energy is stored in batteries installed in your home and is not sent to the power grid. The advantages of this type of system are obvious. First, that the monthly payment of the electricity bill is completely eliminated and second that your home does not depend on the fluctuations of energy or network maintenance work. Although the installation of a battery system could increase your initial investment, it will ultimately result in substantial savings. Even with the right battery, you could sell the power to the network with a profit!

Asset#2sufXrffwg9qKN9ozxPIst

But there are even more possibilities to save with solar energy. There are both federal and local tax credits that can reduce the cost of the initial investment in your system thereby increasing the total amount of your savings throughout the life of your solar system. But how long does a solar panel system really last? Quite. Most solar panels come with 25-year warranties and studies reveal that many of these continue to provide electricity for several years after the warranty expires. In addition, the value of your home increases considerably with a functional solar panel system, yielding even more value to your initial investment. Anyway, it doesn’t matter if you opt for net measurement or batteries, investing in a solar panel system will save you a lot of money and increase the net value of your property. There is much to gain and nothing to lose.

What is Solar Energy?

Solar energy is basically the radiation emitted by the sun. The sun, like all other stars, is a gigantic nuclear reactor that is in a continuous process of nuclear fusion that produces constant radiation. That radiation travels through space to planet Earth, seeps into the atmosphere and comes in the form of light. Throughout history, we humans have learned how powerful sunlight can be: it feeds plants, burns the skin, dries wet things, heats surfaces, among many other things. And as creative beings, we have developed countless ways to use solar energy to our advantage. However, it was not until 1954 that electricity was produced with sunlight.

Technological advances

Considering that most of what we use in our daily lives operates with electric energy, converting sunlight into electricity is one of the most promising technological advances of the last century. And best of all: producing electricity from light does not generate carbon footprints that damage the planet.    But producing electricity from light is not an easy feat and the road has been a long one. In 1839, Alexandre Edmund Becquerel noticed that some materials released electrons when they came into contact with sunlight. This process is known as a photovoltaic process and is the main science behind how a solar panel works.   The discovery of the photovoltaic process led to extensive study during the early twentieth century and finally in the 50s, it was possible to produce functional plates. Already in the 70s, the possible uses of solar energy in homes and businesses began to be considered. However, those first solar panels were too expensive and too inefficient to be used by the general public. They were simply not economically viable.   Today, advances in technology and material productions have allowed solar panels to be much more efficient and economical. So much so, that a modern solar energy system can save you money, reducing or completely eliminating the amount of the electricity bill.

Solar Plates

Solar panels consist of multiple interconnected cells that together generate a greater amount of electricity. Solar cells are constructed of a semiconductor material (silicone) that releases electrons when they come into contact with sunlight (photovoltaic process). The released electrons travel through the silicone layers generating direct current (DC) electricity. Because direct current is not used in Puerto Rico and the United States, a converter or inverter is required to change the direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) that can be used in the home. Once converted, electricity can be used at the time, stored in a battery or sent to the power grid for an energy credit.Asset#5AAZtzYMLj1zIr9eZLzML1

 Batteries

Advances in storage technologies (batteries) have also contributed to the accessibility and efficiency of solar energy in daily living. A solar system with battery prevents blackouts and even allows you to be completely disconnected from the grid (“off-grid”) and continue supplying the stored energy overnight. There are a variety of batteries that can be used depending on personal needs and preferences. Lead-acid ones are usually cheaper but require continuous maintenance. Sealed lead-acid batteries do not require much maintenance and are better suited to a system that is not used regularly such as a country house or vacation. For highly used systems, the recent trend is to use lithium batteries since they require very little maintenance and allow them to expand the storage capacity by adding new batteries to the system.    Thanks to the efficiency of the modern panels and the improvements in the complementary systems, the solar photovoltaic applications are innumerable, since almost everything we operate with electricity. Today we use solar energy to charge our cell phones, turn on lights, energize entire buildings, and even satellites and space vehicles. It is a constantly growing technology and is expected to continue to increase as cell quality continues to improve.

However, solar energy in the form of visible light is not the only one that can be used to generate electricity. There are multiple alternatives to solar energy, such as thermal solar energy that is nothing other than ultraviolet light that is what produces the heat that the sun gives us. There are technologies available capable of concentrating light and using heat to generate electricity and heat water. Although these applications are usually used only on industrial scales, solar thermal energy is used in

Energy saving tips: How can I save energy?

We all want to pay less on our electricity bill every month while also doing everything possible to reduce pollution and the greenhouse effect. What everyone wonders is, how? Here are several simple and practical tips that will help you save energy and save money with renewable energy.

First step

The first thing we should do is reduce energy consumption in everything. To achieve this, we must be aware at all times to turn off the lights that we are not using and disconnect all electronic devices. We can replace the bulbs with LED bulbs, which consume about 10% less than regular lamps while they have a lifespan of 500% more. When buying them, they may be a bit more expensive, but the effect results in long-term economy in monthly electricity consumption and that it will not be necessary to replace them so often.

Turn it off!

Another important tip to save energy is not to recharge electronic devices or leave them in hibernation mode if we are not using them. Make a habit of completely shutting down the computer once you finish using it every night. Similarly, the cell phone should not be left connected to the charger overnight, since with a few hours it is enough to fully charge it. This good habit will also extend the life of the batteries and help you save money with renewable energy. It is estimated that between 8 and 10% of the total electricity consumed in the home comes from electronic devices that remain plugged in all the time, even if they are not being used. This includes hairdryers, irons, appliances and computers, and printers. Turn them off!

Change to “inverter”

As for air conditioners, something very necessary in the tropics, if you prevent the room (or the house) from getting too hot it will need less energy to cool it later. If possible, change the units to what is known as “inverter”, which are much cheaper, and leave them on in fan mode with the compressor off. When you return to the house you will see that the room stays cooler and it will be easier for the unit to cool. Likewise, it is recommended that air conditioners operate at 75 ° F (24 ° C) for maximum energy savings. From then on, for each degree in temperature that decreases the consumption of electricity increases between 5 to 8% in the bill.

Finally, the appliances that consume the most electricity in the home are the water heater, the clothes dryer, the stove and the hairdryer (blow dryer). If possible, choose to change your dryer and your stove to propane gas and your electric or line heater for a solar heater. As for the “blower”, how about changing the style to a natural dried one? Everything is to save energy.
